"Not Your Average Neighbour" picks up 2 awards at the 10th Toronto Indie Shorts festival


CheeWei's short documentary “Not Your Average Neighbour”, picked up the “Best Documentary” and “Best Edit” awards at the 10th Toronto Indie Shorts Festival.

The festival mainly focuses on arthouse narrative, experimental, animation and documentaries from international and Canadian talents.

The festival was created by a team of Canadian directors, producers, critics and film scholars from York University of Toronto.

The mission of the festival is to recognize and promote short films through the Toronto Indie Shorts. 

"Not Your Average Neighbour's" World Premiere @ Grenoble Street Art Film Festival

CheeWei’s short film “Not your Average Neighbour” is finally ready to say ‘Bonjour” to the world! “Not Your Average Neighbour” will be having its world premiere at the “Grenoble Street Art Film Festival,”.

The public screening will take place on Saturday, 28th May 2022 @ 8.30pm (Grenoble Time) at the Space Junk Arts Centre, Grenoble, France.

The Grenoble Street Art Movie Fest is the first festival in the world to present street art through the prism of cinema.

The largest of its kind, the Street Art Movie Fest was created as part of the Grenoble Street Art Fest, one of the largest festivals dedicated to street art since 2015.

This festival is held in association with Space junk Arts Centre Grenoble, an art center dedicated to emerging culture since 2003. The Grenoble Street Art Fest, is supported by the Grenoble Civic Council and the Metropole of Grenoble. It also has support from the “Cinémathèque Of Grenoble” and Arthouse theatre around Grenoble.

CheeWei's Short film "Not Your Average Neighbour" picks up 2 awards at the World Film Carnival

CheeWei's short documentary “Not Your Average Neighbour”, collected the “Outstanding Achievement Award” in the “Best Film Score” and “Best Documentary Film” categories at the recent World Film Carnival.

"Not Your Average Neighbour" explores the controversial world of graffiti and street art told through the perspective of Steve, a Melbournian street artist and a personal friend of CheeWei’s.

Steve shares his personal story of finding a place in the underground scene where public perception shifts between visual artistry and vandalism.

The win came as a total surprise to CheeWei and his team as Singapore being the host country of the festival, has strict laws treating underground street art as a criminal activity, which leads to massive fines or imprisonment not exceeding three years, and also mandatory corporal punishment of not less than three strokes and not more than eight strokes of the cane.

Told through the perspective of a street artist, this film brings audiences into the controversial world of Graffiti and Street Art. a world where the public perception of the craft often borderlines between artistry and a public nuisance.

“Not Your Average Neighbour” is now making its way through the Film Festival Circuit and we will keep you updated on any screenings near your city!

Nominations at the US 40th Annual news and Documentary Emmy

The PBS series NOVA has earned three nominations for the (US) 40th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards. NOVA’s nominated films include "Decoding the Weather Machine" and "Transplanting Hope" in the Outstanding Science and Technology Documentary category, and "Black Hole Apocalypse" in the Writing category.

CheeWei has been extremely humbled to have composed the score for 2 of the 3 nominated films: "Decoding the Weather Machine", and "Black Hole Apocalypse."

CheeWei's score for NOVA - BLACK HOLE APOCALYPSE has just been nominated as a Finalist in the ORIGINAL MUSIC SCORE category of the New York TV & Film Festivals!

In this two-hour special, astrophysicist and author Janna Levin takes viewers on a journey to the frontiers of black hole science. Along the way, we meet leading astronomers and physicists on the verge of finding new answers to provocative questions about these shadowy monsters: Where do they come from? What’s inside? What happens if you fall into one? And what can they tell us about the nature of space, time, and gravity?

BLACK HOLE APOCALYPSE is also been nominated a Finalist in the “SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY” category of the New York TV and Film Festival!
